SOMERSET - ISABEL MEEROVICH (née GUS) passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Spring Hills at Somerset. She was 89 years old.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Isabel immigrated to the United States in 1969, living in Los Angeles, CA, South Orange and Maplewood, settling in Somerset 3 years ago.

She was an artist and her talent led her to become an art therapist for Essex County Hospital Center at Cedar Grove. Isabel also became a realtor and once she retired from the hospital, she continued her career, selling houses that became homes for her many and varied clients.

A fearlessly independent woman she was also known for her creativity and was not afraid to voice her views or try something different. At the age of 70 she even remodeled her home from design to overseeing completion before selling up and moving to a new life in Los Angeles.

Isabel loved many things, but nothing more than her family, who she supported and cherished throughout her life. She was passionate about the arts, something she instilled and encouraged in her children and grandchildren, many of whom proudly display her paintings in their homes in the US and UK. She also published a book of short stories with her beloved brother, Leonardo, reflecting her early life and serving as a reminder of her sense of humor, her passion and upbringing. She is deeply loved by her family and friends who cherish the memories they have of her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Aron, in 1965, and her sister, Edith Gus, in 2013.

Surviving are her three children, Daniel Meerovich and his wife, Laura, of Somerset, Jeannette Macy and her husband, Jonathan, of Los Angeles, CA, and Mariella Russell and her husband, Roger, of London, United Kingdom; her brother, Leonardo Gus and his wife, Monica, of Merida, Mexico; five grandchildren, Alexandra, Adam, Amy, Michael and Aaron, and two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Kyle.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at 10:45 am, at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 189 Gill Lane, Iselin, under the direction of MOUNT SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPELS, East Brunswick. For directions, please visit our "Services" page.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131 (www.parkinson.org)

CandleMy beautiful and loved aunt Isabel. Life and distance kept us apart but she was always in our way family conversation, surely part of my childhood memories and also the times that we met. A Courageous woman that met difficulties and hardship with determination. An artist that created beautiful pieces that I got to see in person and enjoyed.
Her book, that my uncle Leibu help to publish, it’s a treasure to her family and friends, with stories of her childhood in Montevideo, reflects what life of immigrant jewish families were like, specially my family, my grandpa Azriel and my grandma Sarah, relatives and family friends.
I am grateful to Isabel for that book
Rest on peace.
Love to all the family and friends
