MONROE TOWNSHIP - IDA TURNER passed on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Brookdale Senior Living in Monroe Township. She was 92 years old.
Born in Krakow, Poland, to Henrik and Fela (née Blonder) Jakobowicz, before immigrating to the U.S. in 1949, where she lived in Monroe Township for the last 40 years.
Before embarking on her journey into the U.S Ida and her family spent time at the Cegielniana concentration camp, Krakow ghetto, and the Krakau‐ Plaszow labor camp. Ida was selected for work at Oskar Schindler's Emalia factory in Krakow until August 1944. She was returned to Plaszow and then sent to Auschwitz in October. In January 1945 she was taken on a death march to Ravensbruck then transferred to the Neustadt‐Glewe sub camp, where she was liberated by the Russian army in May 1945. She returned to Krakow and was reunited with her sister, brother, and father (her mother drowned in the Baltic Sea after Stutthof was evacuated), and met her husband, Murray Turner.
Ida was a member of the East Brunswick Jewish Center and B'nai Shalom. She also was a past president of sisterhood at B'nai Israel of Midwood, Brooklyn.
In her leisure time, Ida enjoyed knitting, fine dining, spending time at her synagogue, spending time with her grandson Kraig and traveling to Israel.
Ida was predeceased by her mother, Fela Jakobowicz; her brother, Janek Jakobowicz and her sister, Tola Jakobowicz.
Surviving are her son, Robert Turner and his wife, Adrienne, of East Brunswick; her grandson, Kraig Turner and his wife, Danielle Kudlacik and her great-grandchild, Mirah Turner.
A chapel service will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at 9:15 am, at MOUNT SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPELS, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Interment will follow at Beth Abraham Cemetery, East Brunswick. For directions, please visit our "Services" page.
