HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON - HOWARD H. GOLDBERG passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023, at his residence. He was 75 years old. He was known to his family by many names in addition to Howard, including Chaim, Grandpa, Daddy, and Goldie.
Born in Berlin, Germany after The Holocaust in a displaced persons camp in 1948, to Leib (also known as Leon and Ari) and Luba (née Glasser) Goldberg, his family immigrated to the United States when he was two years old on the United States Army Transport General M. L. Hersey ship. Howard graduated from Stuyvesant High School and New York University. He joined the textile business with his family. He also cultivated a lifelong love for science.
Howard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Yael (née Schlosser); and his brother, Elliot Goldberg, who died in Europe before Howard was born.
Howard's primary passion was his family, especially his wife, Yael, two children, and four grandchildren. Howard and Yael were both very proud of their family. When their children were young, Howard stayed up all night after long days at work crafting birthday cakes in shapes ranging from castles to baseball fields. He was thrilled that both of his children received doctoral degrees and shared this with anyone who asked (and especially those that did not). He was delighted when Jonathan and Ariane met their spouses and lovingly embraced Rebecca and Steven (and their families) into his family. In later years, he could be found playing "Pony and People School" with Madeline; building Legos with Henry; coloring with Oren; and cuddling with baby Yael. It brought Howard great joy to be a big part of his grandchildren's lives.
Surviving are his son, Jonathan Goldberg and his wife, Rebecca, of Bethesda, Maryland; his daughter, Ariane Soll and her husband, Steven, of Oregon City, Oregon; his sister, Nina Reshef, of Israel; and his grandchildren, Madeline Erica Goldberg, Henry Gifford Goldberg, Oren Yael Soll, and Yael Luba Soll. Martin Soll, his son-in-law's father, played a critical role in caring for him over the last few years.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:15 am, at Mt. Sinai Cemetery at 361 Highway 79, Marlboro, NJ, under the direction of MOUNT SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPELS, East Brunswick.
